1940 SEASON REVIEW
At first glance, the 1940 Chicago White Sox team look like they should have contended for the pennant. They had one of the best rotations in the league led by aces Bob Carpenter and Freddie Fitzsimmons. Their bullpen was magnificent with five players with an ERA under 3.00. They also had the rookie of the year in left fielder Enos Slaughter. But ultimately their offense could not provide the run support to help the pitching staff, who had the second best ERA in the HRBL at 3.25. Chicago's main problem was the lack of a power hitter as Chuck Klein led the team with only 10 home runs.

While the White Sox remain one of the better teams in the American League, White Sox management did little to address the holes in their ballclub. Chicago did not sign anyone during the free agency period and drafted pitcher Johnny Schmitz, who should help make the formidable Chicago rotation even better. Chicago was unable to address their hitting problems and the Chicago pitchers will most likely suffer another year of a lack of run support.
